Phil and Patsy Rowley at Alymer Lake Lodge in the NWT

Phil and Patsy Rowley spent 5 days at Alymer Lake Lodge in the NWT fly fishing for lake trout and arctic grayling this past July. Patsy spent lots of her time videoing and yes she did have the opportunity to catch some fabulous lakers and grayling! Phil was determined to cast and retrieve exclusively for the lakers. He was quite successful too. If you head over to Alymer Lake Lodge's Web Site, you can read all about the fly fishing opportunities that are at the lodge. Kevin and Patti McNeil are the hosts and they do an amazing job taking care of their guests! Take a look!

Happy Thanksgiving-Staying Close to Home

Happy Thanksgiving, Canadian style, for my American friends who regularly check in to see what is up in Central Alberta. Karen and I have been spending lots of time with our family. Tomorrow is "Turkey Day" in our house. We hope to have a full house of the kids and their families. Karen and I have dashed out to fly fish on the Red Deer River this long weekend. This time of the year we usually target walleye and whitefish. We leave the browns alone as they try to spawn.

Karen and I hope you have a a relaxing Thanksgiving. We always reflect on how lucky we are for many reasons. Stay safe and get out when you can to fly fish. Winter is coming quickly!

Becoming One with the Walleye

Well I wanted to try and get some underwater shots of walleye today. I waited until the mercury crawled up past the freezing mark. Of course I had to catch some walleye. The low light in the autumn months can make for some cool photos. The fly fishing this afternoon was excellent. I used Dave Green's Candy Corn for most of the 4 hours that I was out! One fellow was having excellent success casting and retrieving. I was jigging my fly below an indicator. The strikes can be soft. The only downside to my day was getting my camera in the water. It is a waterproof lumix camera made by Panasonic. My arm gets wet and after 4 hours in the water I have to call it so I can warm up. The results are pretty decent too!
