Pike Streamers and Morrish Mice with Dr. Bill Young

Dr. Bill Young was our guest instructor tonight. He taught 15 fly tyers how to tie a pike streamer that he designed. Effective pike patterns do not need to be complicated. A rabbit strip with lots of flash, crystal chenille and some hackle in your favourite colours will certainly get the attention of pike. Dr. Bill also showed us how to tie a Morrish Mouse. This is an excellent pattern that brown trout will devour in the dark and is a tried and true fish catcher for so many species. Thanks Bill for an enjoyable evening of fly tying.

Next week Ralf Kuntzemann is our guest instructor. This will be a tying session that you will definitely enjoy! Ralf is a very creative fly tyer with many neat ideas, some unconventional yet very effective.

We still need some fly tyers for our all day Fly Tying Workshop with Phil Rowley on February 11th. Please send me a text (403-598-3802) or e-mail me bob.vanderwater@rdpsd.ab.ca. The cost is $75- that includes all of the tying materials and lunch!

Tying a Carey Special, Jimmy Legs and Glass Ant with Rick Miyauchi

What an excellent start to the 2023 fly tying season. Seventeen fly tyers came out to take in Rick Miyauchi's presentation. Rick guided the group through how to tie up a Carey Special, a Jimmy Legs and a glass ant. As always, everyone was worried that we would be tying tiny flies but Rick taught us to tie two classic flies and a new ant pattern using glass beads. A Carey Special is an outstanding pattern that can be used to imitate everything from a dragon fly nymph, a damsel nymph as well as a cased caddis. The variations are endless with the different coloured variegated chenilles that you could use for the body. A Jimmy Legs is a staple on many rivers in Alberta. A Jimmy Legs is an excellent stone fly imitation. It maybe one of the most popular stone fly nymphs on the Bow River. The final fly is one I have not encountered before, a glass ant. Using two different sized glass beads on a size 16 hook with some hackle makes for an excellent dropper fly on our rivers.

Next week, Dr. Bill Young is our presenter. Bill is tying pike flies and you will need some 3/0 thread (210 denier), colour is not a big deal.

We still have lots of space for our workshop with Phil Rowley! Give Bob a call or text (403-598-3802) to sign up.
