Local Lakes Are Still Fishing Great

Trout fly fishing at our local pot hole lakes is still producing excellent results. Trout have been feeding on chironomids, caddis larvae, scuds, caddis adults, daphnia and leeches. Bubba Gump Shrimp has been producing well for several fly fishers as has flashback pheasant tails (stripped) rusty nail chironomids and your favourite leech patterns (Tokaryk Specials) and of course blobs!

Please be ware that water temperatures are creeping up into the high 60Fs. It is up to your own personal decision when to stop fly fishing lakes because of water temperature. Many lakes are edging up in water temperature.

Another Awesome Day Chasing Lake Whitefish

Another fantastic day fly fishing for lake whitefish today. Rick and I loaded up the truck and hooked on the 1756 G3 for a trip to fly fish for lake whitefish. Karen and I had an excellent outing just a few days ago and the conditions seemed to be the same. After launching the boat, we motored out to a tried and true spot! The fly fishing was slow to start with. Bloodworms and chironomids just did not seem to get the interest of the lake whites. We decided to go searching for the lake whites after trying several depths. The searching paid off big time. We eased our way along a weed line and we saw several fish in 7 feet of water. We dropped the anchors and it did not take long for us to hook up. Bloodworms and size 12-14 black and red ice cream cone chironomids were now working great. We did take the time to ensure our bottom fly is just 6 inches to 12 inches off of the bottom. The next 3 hours was amazing fly fishing. We were even able to sight fish to several lake whites that were cruising.

The interesting part of our day was finding the fish were not very active in a place that just a few days ago was on fire. We took the time to find hungry fish. The depth is important. Today the active fish were in 7 feet of water with a water surface temperature of 58-60F. We talked to 2 fellas that landed just 1 whitefish all day and they were using scented baits (legal). Those fellas were not able to find were the active fish were. Rick and I tried different depths and then finally found active fish on a flat.

Fly Fishing for Lake Whitefish

My dear departed friend, Bernie Peet, used to call me and encourage me to go fly fishing for lake whitefish! Today was the perfect day to get out and enjoy fly fishing for lake whites. Karen and I got a late morning start but once we were set up, it did not take long to catch several dozen lake whites. We have a few places we usually check out and the conditions were perfect. Just a bit of chop on the lake, a water temperature around 53F and gin clear water! We set up in 8 feet of water and we were using small blood worm patterns that we dangled just above the bottom. The lake whites were quite active and we had a blast. After awhile, we moved into shallow enough water that we could see the bottom. At that point, we sight fished for the lake whitefish. In early afternoon, we switched to chironomids. We used size 12-14 black sally chironomids, they worked great. There was a bit of a lull in the action mid afternoon but soon afterwards, the action picked up! By late afternoon, we called it a day. It was a picture perfect day. As we motored along the shallows, we saw lots of whitefish. It was fun to change up a bit today and target these hard fighting fish! Thanks for the advice Bernie!
