A Beautiful Day on Sylvan Lake

What a beauty of a day on Sylvan Lake. Karen, Steve, Chili the dog and I arrived at Sylvan Lake and launched at a very busy area but everyone did a great job putting their vehicle in a spot that did not hinder others. Steve helped me unload the pram. Karen and I motored to a weed line while Steve rowed Chili to the same spot in his drift boat. We set up in 7 feet of water. The wind was almost nonexistent and that made our day on the water so pleasant. We even had what I call a light chironomid riffle for a few hours. That was an added bonus! We use a weight or forceps attached to our bottom fly to adjust our depth so we are about 10-12 inches off of the bottom. We all were into lake whitefish for the entire morning using size 14 black and red ice cream cone chironomids and size 14 blood worms. It was nice to see other members of our gang out on the water as well as others from out of town and it looked like everyone was getting into lake whites.

The added fun of the day was Chili the dog. It was his 4th birthday so Steve decided to bring a portable burner out on the water and he cooked hot dogs. Chili dog loved it, so did Karen, Steve and I!

The action slowed in the afternoon and convective heating brought in some showers. We decided to call it a day early in the afternoon. Yard work was calling and a few errands needed to be done.

It was fun to talk to some fellows from Edmonton who love to fly fish Sylvan Lake. It sounded like they had an awesome day too! They were also kind enough to help load my pram along with my good friend Roy Saunders.

Sylvan Lake is a great place to fly fish! Lake whitefish are definitely under rated and you have a chance at walleye, pike, perch and burbot. Has anyone caught a burbot on a fly rod?
