Walleye on the Fly

Darren Petersen got into a mess of walleye recently on the Red Deer.  The Spikey/Toothy critters were eager to gobble up clouser minnows dead drifted on the bottom with the occasional twitch to inspire a strike.  Walleye are a neat looking camouflaged fish. They seem to be pretty efficient predators, hunting in packs and moving into the shallows as it gets dark.  Walking back to the vehicle past dusk their eyes can be spotted with my headlamp glowing in mere inches of water where they have come to shore to hunt for baitfish.  Darren suspects the modest numbers of brown trout in this river have to be quick and avoid favored walleye haunts to get any chance at maturity.
