Walleye on the Red Deer River

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and the harvest is in full swing! Hopefully the approaching rain and snow does not slow the combining too much! The farmers want to get their crop into the bin asap! A warm chinook wind was blowing warm air down the eastern side of the mountains today.  That wind curbed our plan to fly fish at Sylvan Lake.

Luckily there is always a Plan B. Today the boat stayed in the garage and we headed to the Red Deer River in pursuit of walleye. We were not sure what we would find. The wind was rocking with a fast moving chinook arch overhead! That made the casting tough but we were game.

We knew that the potential to have a good day was right in front of us. An approaching cold front can get the fish moving and actively feeding. And yes, that is exactly what we found. The action was quite constant. The walleye were aggressive and that allowed us to have a great day on the water. The wind buffeted our faces but we persevered. We fly fished with Bob Morenski's Ice Minnow and Dave Green's Candy Corn. The walleye loved them.

We also were checked for our fishing licences today by two Fish and Wildlife Officers. The two officers wanted to ensure we were not retaining any fish illegally and were following the regulations. Karen and I had a long talk with Kevin Stalker; Superintendent of the Central Region and William Fletcher, Fish and Wildlife Officer. They were friendly. They watched us from afar and knew we were catching fish. The interaction we had was very positive. There was a lot to talk about. Karen and I were both pleased that the two officers came to check that we were following the regulations.

Have a look!
