Dr. Bill Young and I were spending the day with Hilian and Axel out on the water. We had a big surprise when we were picked up at 6 am and motored over to Caye Caulker. It was a bone jarring ride because of the choppy conditions. Once we found a great line of mangroves out of the wind, we set up to fly fish for tarpon. The cross wind made casting tough but we were game. Hilian had me tie up small tarpon flies when I was still in Red Deer. They were still too large for the tarpon we were targeting. Finally Dr. Bill pulled out a tiny trout fly that was white in the corner of his fly box, the very next cast; tarpon on! None of the tarpon were very large but that did not matter. We hooked 5 and landed three. I had a larger tarpon on but lost it on its 4 jump. Oh well. I should have bowed my rod to the silver king, ... lesson learned.
The tarpon action died out and we decided to motor to an area close the channels at the south end of Ambergris Caye to look for more tarpon. We found two but they were so far under the mangroves, there was no chance.
We shifted to fly fishing for bonefish, we had a great time connecting with quite a few.
The day was a good balance of casting to tarpon and bonefishing. Considering the conditions, we connected with quite a few fish.
Hilian and Axel had us on fish all day. The heavy wind made casting tough but we were up for the challenge.
We ended the fly fishing portion of our day buy motoring along the reef side through town. That was quite neat!
Sardines everywhere. I wonder what the baby tarpon were dining on?
