My fly fishing journal reminded me that three years ago at Dickson Trout Pond, I witnessed and fly fished the most amazing chironomid hatch I have ever seen. The trout were on the chironomids and the fly fishing was amazing. I decided to head out to Dickson for a few hours today to take a look and see what what going on. Of course my fly rod was in my hand. I do know that Dickson was just recently stocked. No chironomids were hatching but the trout were very active. I walked along the causeway armed with my Bubba Gump Shrimp and caught fish after fish. Most of the fish were stockers. I did catch some rainbows in the 12 inch category but I did not connect with any larger rainbows or tiger trout! I fished with my flies just 3-4 below a strike indicator and I had hits or caught fish on every cast. Crazy!
My buddy Doug had an excellent day at Kerbes Pond. He was using black and red ice cream cone chironomids as well as ice minnows. Keep an eye on the stocking report. Central Alberta is ready for another fantastic fly fishing season!
