Shore Lunch in the Arctic

I love shore lunch. It is a tradition while staying at a lodge like Plummers Arctic Lodge to enjoy a fresh fish right out of the lake for lunch! Our group always opted to have shore lunch! We had lake trout, arctic grayling and arctic char as the main ingredient for our shore lunches. Arctic char on the Coppermine River, grayling on the Sulky River and lake trout on Great Bear Lake is amazing fare! I always looked forward to these exquisite lunches. Add potatoes, corn and beans and you have a delectable lunch! Reid, Alex and Colin knew how to cook up theses amazing lunches. All we had to provide was willow sticks and an appetite. Yum!

A Wintery October 1st on the Eastern Slopes

October 1 already? Last month of the season. Yep already! But I do not want it to end.

My neighbour Colin loves to fly fish. We decided today to test out his new all weather radials. Of course our fly gear was nicely loaded in the back of the truck. Everybody knows that the last few days have been snowy. We still had to get out to fly fish! The road was snowy and icy but the new Goodrich All Terrain KO2 Tires kept us safely on the gravel. 

It was cold, real cold when we arrived so we set up with nymphing until it warmed up. Our tip tops iced up at -7C. Wiggle worms and small nymphs of all descriptions kept us constantly catching beautifully conditioned cutthroats. As the temperature warmed, Blue Winged Olives started to pop and then the fly fishing got real interesting. Size 18-20 BWOs on 6x tippet got us a lot of action. The afternoon sun, willing cutthroat and the tiny mayflies kept us happy.

The cutts are starting to move into wintering holes. We found a few of these holes. The action was excellent.

As the rising cutthroat slowed, we called it a day. The trip home was uneventful. A lot of the snow had melted and the road was muddy. The new tires got an A. We definitely had an A plus day!
