Late Summer Whitefish at Sylvan Lake

Larry Prowse and I headed to Sylvan Lake today to fly fish for lake whitefish. It was a picture perfect late summer day. The water temperature was 58F and there was no algae to speak of. We started off in 8 to 9 feet of water fly fishing with chironoimids. We caught a few whites but the fishing was not fast and furious. We finally moved into 5 feet or less and then we could see the whitefish cruising and then our day got interesting. We changed to flashbacks and we caught several by casting in front of the cruisers, twitching the fly and then game on. We lost lots but we caught lots too! Awesome day!

Bonefish in Hawaii

My buddy Byron is in Hawaii. He has been able to do some DIY fly fishing in Oahu for bonefish! As you can see, he was successful too. The bones in Hawaii are large and challenging to catch! Way to go Byron! Often fly fishers blind cast on flats that are deeper than in Belize and the Bahamas. The bonefish in Hawaii can get incredibly large! The coral heads, coral and sand make for challenging sight fishing and when you connect with a bonefish, they can easily wrap you around a coral head and shred your line!

Big Spring Creek Brown

Some of our spring creeks have some impressive brown trout in them. You do have to pay your dues to connect with these big beasts. Bruce Tilbrook did some willow crashing and hooked up on 3 or 4 biggies. He was able to land this big buck on a hopper. Bruce told me that the BWOs were out but the browns were ignoring them but they certainly paid attention to Bruce's hopper imitation! Well done Bruce!
