Details for Fly Tying on Monday February 3rd and a Few Changes to Tying Schedule

February already. Yep in just a few days we are moving into the month of February! This Monday February 3rd at 6:30 pm; we will be tying a Complex Twist Articulated Sex Dungeon. Kelly Galloup is the originator of the Sex Dungeon. I absolutely love this great streamer. On February 3rd (this Monday), we will modify the pattern slightly using the complex twist technique for the body. The resulting streamer is an amazing fish catcher. I have caught big browns on the Bow River, tangled with lake trout and tustled with gigantic pike as well as big bull trout.

What do you need to bring? Sturdy white thread. I will be using UTC 210 (3/0) white thread although can get by with white UTC 140 (6/0). For those of you who have gel spun white thread, bring it!

Fly Fishing for Monster Pike at Cree Lake, SK and Pike Flies that Work

Cree Lake is a trophy fishery. Tonight we looked at slides and video from a trip that happened late last June. Doug Pullan then did a presentation about making your own leaders at a fraction of the cost of a bought leader. Finally we tied three flies for pike. Details of the flies are below.

Next week we will be tying articulated flies. Bring white UTC 140 or 210 thread (6/0 or 3/0)

Building Your Own Leader

Doug did an excellent presentation on making a titanium leader. Take a look at the materials below that you need to build your own. 

Cut a 17 inch length of titanium leader wire, install a swivel at one end and use a crimping tool (and crimping sleeves) to fasten. Then the fastener for the flies are installed at the other end using the same procedure.

Details for Fly Tying on Monday January 27th

Hi Everyone!

This Monday, January 27th; Karen, Doug and I will be doing a presentation on fly fishing at Cree Lake. This will be a very visual presentation. Come on out and see what it is like to chase trophy pike, lake trout and arctic grayling. We will also be tying some pike flies and learning how to make pike leaders for a fraction of the cost of a store bought pike leader!

See you Monday night. Og yes, be sure to bring a clip of some sort (buy at the Dollar Store), to secure rabbit hair before spinning it with a dubbing twister. Bring black, red and white 6/0 thread, UTC 140. 

Last night Lorne Fitch came to Red Deer to do a presentation. It was a joint effort from Red Deer River Naturalist and Freshwater Conservation Canada (formally Trout Unlimited Canada). Kerrywood Nature Centre was full. Lorne read excerpts from his book, Travels Up the Creek. One particular chapter was a very telling story of a relative that worked in the coal mines of the Crowsnest Pass.

Lorne is a long time provincial biologist. His comments about opening up coal mining in the province were very telling. We all have to get together and try to stop this insanity!

Shrimp Flies and Tactics for Fly Fishing with Scuds

Hi Everyone!

Rick Miyauchi was our guest instructor tonight. Rick showed the gang 2 of his favourite shrimp patterns and he took the time to share how to fly fish shrimp. It was a very educational evening and the 24 fly fishers who took in Rick's session tonight learned a lot about shrimp patterns and how to fly fish with those patterns.

Rick has divided his session into two parts and he will continue with his presentation on March 3rd!

Don't forget the special presentation this Thursday night at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre. Retired biologist and environmentalist, Lorne Fitch will be our special guest. Wine and cheese at 6 ish and his presentation is at 7 pm. There is no charge to take in the presentation!

Next week Karen, Doug and Bob will be doing a special presentation on Cree Lake. Big pike, lake trout and arctic grayling. We will also be tying some pike flies and learning how to make your own pike leaders.

Bathometric Maps are so useful when you get to a lake. Looking for structure will always be a key to how you set up on the lake!
