When you go fly fishing on the open prairie, you have to deal with wind. Doug and I headed east today and we knew that strong winds were a real possibility. ...and the wind blew way harder than we anticipated! Luckily we had a stretch of a reservoir that was fishable. We bundled up and rigged up with Tokaryk Specials. Doug found a deflection that had several willing rainbows. I too found some active rainbows and soon after, I went exploring. I managed to catch a dandy brown trout on a flashback and as I headed back towards where Doug was fly fishing I switched to ice minnows. I caught several tiger trout and a handful of rainbows.
The wind continued to amp up throughout the afternoon. Doug continued with Tokaryks and I stayed with ice minnows. We both caught mainly rainbows and a few tiger trout!
One thing we both did that helped a lot was shorten our leader. We were dangling our flies just 3-4 feet below a strike indicator so a 7 foot leader was just fine. Doug fished with just one fly and I fished with two. I had a few tangles but I kept my tag short and that helped reduce tangles. Doug was giving his set up tugs (or jigs) even with the big wind. He was definitely inducing strikes with that added animation to his fly!
Well the afternoon flew by quickly and we headed back to Red Deer. We caught a couple dozen trout! Neither Doug nor I was cold. We brought lots of layers, that mattered a lot today!
