Innovative Patterns from Les Robinson

Bernie Peet was our guest fly tyer tonight. Bernie taught 16 fly tyers 3 very cool patterns that were developed by Les Robinson.  Les Robinson is an innovative fly tyer from Enderby, BC, who comes up with some very inventive patterns.  He is also a top class fly fisher and Bernie had the pleasure of fishing with him for the very first time last October.  Les had a couple of patterns published in Phil Rowley's book Stillwater Selections - the Double Header chironomid and the LR Boatman, which Phil Nash tied in the class last February. All three patterns will definitely be added to my stillwater fly box. Thanks Bernie for honouring Les by sharing several of his patterns.

Hook: Scud, size 12

Bead: Red 7/64

Thread: Black 8/0

Back: Latex rubber glove strip

Body: Peacock crystal chenille, medium, marked with black permanent marker and coated with Hard as Hull, Hard as Nails or Super Glue

Suspended mayfly (Les Robinson originator)

Hook: 2X nymph, #12 or 14

Tail: Pheasant tail fibres

Body: Pheasant tail

Rib:  Gold wire, fine

Wing case:  2mm brown foam strip

Thorax:  Brown or green dubbing

Legs:  Partridge, tied in like a throat hackle

Antistatic Mayfly (Les Robinson originator)

Hook:  Long curved nymph, # 12-14

Thread: 8/0 white

Tail: Partridge fibres

Body:  Narrow strip (2mm) of antistatic bag over built up abdomen of white thread, coloured on the underside with green marker pen

Wing case: Narrow strip (2mm) of antistatic bag, coloured green on the underside

Legs: Partridge fibres

Thorax:  Brown or green fine dubbing (Alternative version uses tan ostrich herl)

The Screaming Banshee and Amy's Ant

Hi Everybody!

What a fun evening. There were 24 fly tyers having a great time while learning two new patterns that were new to all of us! It was my turn to be in front of the camera. I had my eye on two cool patterns that I hoped to share and I definitely want to fish! The first pattern was a very popular foam pattern that was introduced by Jack Dennis called Amy's Ant. This is a rather busy pattern with a lot going on. I belive that Amy was Jack's daughter. The second pattern came from Charlie Craven. I am a big fan of his flies. Take a look when you get a chance at Charlie's Fly Box. Charlie has a new pattern that is called the Screaming Banshee. It is a skating caddis pattern that is quite brilliant.

The best part of the night for me was seeing our newest bionic man, Doug Pullen, out with the gang! Knee replacement and hip replacement seemed to be a staple of many of our gang!

Details for the Phil Rowley Workshop on January 18th!

Hi Everybody!

Phil Rowley sent the following material you will need for the fly tying workshop on January 18th. The workshop will be at Mattie McCullough School which is located at 26 Lawford Avenue. The easiest way to get there is to get off Highway 2 (QE2) at 32nd Street and travel east all the way to the end (you will go past Hunting Hills High School). Once you get to the end of 32nd Street, turn right and you will see the school on your right about a block down the street. We will provide coffee, water, snacks. For lunch, either bring your own or order pizza (shared) with the those who want to do this. The workshop will start at 9 ish, please come early and have a coffee at 8:30 ish! The workshop will wrap up at 4 pm.

We still have room for 5 or 6 tyers! Remember that the cost is $40.

Here are the materials you will need to bring, mostly spooled products such as thread and wire.

...if there are materials you cannot easily get ahold of, no worries, we will share! I will bring extra of these materials.

Bob Edens, 403-304-8362, will have the threads and spooled materials. Just give him a call to arrange dropping by the shop!
