Walleye on the Red Deer River-Remember, This is a Catch and Release Fishery

Fly Fishing for Walleye on the Red Deer River has been excellent. With the run of excellent warmer than seasonal weather, it has been fun rooting around below the Glennifer Dam looking for walleye. When you do find the walleye, you often catch several. Several members of our gang have been out giving it a go!

I do wish that everybody who fishes for walleye on the Red Deer River, respects the regulations. I talked to one chap who told me, his buddy said it was ok to harvest walleye.  That was after I saw him kill a walleye. WRONG! It is the responsibility of all fishermen to KNOW THE REGULATIONS!

Ice on-Ice off-Back to Lake Fly Fishing

Warm air has been spilling over the Eastern slopes for just over a week. A few of the lakes that were iced over have shed the thin layer of ice that has formed and we have been given a reprieve! I hope you did not pack your rods away. We had stored the boat but Karen and I decided that it was well worth the effort to unearth the pram and get back out on the water. We broke out a few shrimp fly patterns and got back to it! I even fly fished in shorts yesterday. What a bonus. Looks like the weather will become winter like by the weekend. Hope you are able to enjoy these last few warm weather days, at least until the next chinook!

 

Disaster Averted,... Plan B, ...Again

It was going to be a cutthroat day but that quickly was scuttled when the gravel turned into a skating rink. Karen and I were disappointed. It was already 10C at 8 am. We were not going to take any unnecessary chances. So we diverted to the Red Deer River. It was an excellent decision too! The walleye were quite active as the chinook arch loomed and the wind blew. Luckily it was warm and the action quite steady. We fly fished with a balanced silver minnow pattern. Yesterday was the first time I tried it and it was a winner again today for Karen and I. We even tangled with a few brown trout as an added bonus. We do not target the browns until after they have spawned. The browns were just in the same area!

We have been dealing with a lot of "Plan Bs' lately. Thank goodness we have options that sometimes work out to be better than the original plan.
