Karen and I avoid the west country on long weekends.
We decided to hit Sylvan lake today with our daughter, Kate, and Son-In-Law, Adam. Tiki and Pepper also wanted to be part of the fun so off we went. We hit the lake early but not too early just to avoid traffic at the boat launch! It was a good decision. We motored to a favourite spot and started to chironomid fly fish. Well the action was continuous for lake whites and the occasional walleye. We had a ball. Two old timers came by to ask how we were catching so many fish. I tried to explain what a chironomid was. I gave the two fellas 4 chironomids, told them how to fish with them and they were off to their favourite spot. Pretty sure they were looking for dinner!
Again like last Wednesday, we fly fished in 7 or 8 feet of water. We rigged up our indicators so we were were 6 or 7 feet down. All we used were black and red ice cream cone chironomids, size 12!
When going to Sylvan Lake, pay attention to the wind. Today we had a mainly NW wind which was ideal for where we were fly fishing.
There is no question that we loved Victoria Day! So much fun!
If you have not tried fly fishing for lake white fish or walleye, do give it a go! It will be great until early July and then again in October!
