Day One on the Flats in Belize- Happiness

Doug and I were all set for our first day of fly fishing the flats in over two years. We knew Hilian, our good friend, would be early. Karen went down to the dock to greet Hilian. It was a happy occasion with heart felt hugs all the way around. We sat at the dock to visit and soon after, Doug and I loaded up the Joyce Marie and we were off for a day on the flats.

Today we wanted to get back in the groove. That included getting our casts tuned up. Hilian knew where to look and we were connecting with the grey ghost consistently! Doug and I tied on size 6 Gotchas and the bonefish were so cooperative. I was glad I had practiced the "double haul" back home several times before we left Red Deer. We were using both conventional casts and back hand casts depending on what side of our body the wind was blowing. We also had to remind ourselves to strip set to get a solid hook up! We "trout set" a few times but we were better as we connected with the bonefish! Karen and I brought a large net for Hilian's boat. It was broken in quickly!

It was a happy day. We caught lots of bonefish and more importantly we reconnected with our friend, Hilian. The day went way too fast. We had a blast.
