Everyone in our group wanted a crack at fly fishing for arctic grayling. In the past trips, we did a fly out to the famous Sulky River. This time, we decided to fly fish along several shore areas on Great Bear Lake. That was an excellent decision. We only fly fished with dry flies, specifically Hippie Stompers, chernobyls, mice and Royal Wulffs. The grayling were all over our flies. The grayling in the lake on average were larger than in the Sulky River. We took advantage of the calm water along the shore line. The grayling were rising to midges everywhere. We did keep some for a shore lunch. They tasted amazing too! Our guide team were experts at preparing shore lunch.
The grayling fly fishing is so good that after a couple of hours, we changed back to lake trout fly fishing. That was a great decision because I connected with my largest lake trout of my life on a fly rod a few hundred metres from where we were targeting grayling.
I enjoyed photographing all the action, especially the colourful grayling. Take a look!
Missed!
Look out!
