Fly fishing in the fall can be spectacular for many reasons. The trout are packing on the weight for the long winter and the scenery can be absolutely spectacular!
It is an 11 hour drive over to Russell, Manitoba where we set up at the Russell Inn. It is a perfect central location so we can visit lakes with no extra long drives. The neat thing on the drive over is the migrating geese. Literally 1000s of geese in so many places along the way starting at provost and literally all across Saskatchewan.
We visited Patterson, West Goose, Twin and Corstorphine Lakes. They all are excellent lakes with trophy sized fished.
Our gang from Red Deer included Hal, Karen, Doug, Stuart and his wife Fiona and me. We meet up with Phil Rowley and his wife Patsy along with a few more fly fishers.
We lucked out and had great weather. The air temperature was great and the water temperature hovered around 54F.
The best lake this past week was Corstorphine. It was steady and we caught many hard fighting rainbows from 18-24 inches. It was so nice to see this lake back to its former glory after an aerator failure caused the lake to winter kill 3 years ago.
As usual the week went way too fast. We got home just in front of a nasty snowstorm.
Another awesome trip!
The Ice Minnow was our most consistent producer, along with boatmen/backswimmer patterns and a bruised leech.
We used balance ice minnows both under an indicator and casting and retrieving!
The leaves were changing colour. Every lake was absolutely dressed up in their fall colours!
We even had 4 moose swim across Patterson Lake. They were hanging out on the island and decided it was time to leave.
The wind behaved itself until the afternoon of the last day.
The geese fly over Patterson Lake all day!
Stuart and Fiona tangled with a lot of trout over their stay!
Karen tagged two giant rainbows on the first day.
Larry getting his Crestliner into the water at Patterson Lake!
Fiona tangling with a big Corstorphine rainbow!
Pin fry everywhere. Get out the ice minnows!
A typical fall throat sample of pin fry, boatmen and backswimmers.
Larry and Patsy tangling with several big rainbows.
Doug and Karen spent the week fly fishing together!
