Another Awesome Day Chasing Lake Whitefish

Another fantastic day fly fishing for lake whitefish today. Rick and I loaded up the truck and hooked on the 1756 G3 for a trip to fly fish for lake whitefish. Karen and I had an excellent outing just a few days ago and the conditions seemed to be the same. After launching the boat, we motored out to a tried and true spot! The fly fishing was slow to start with. Bloodworms and chironomids just did not seem to get the interest of the lake whites. We decided to go searching for the lake whites after trying several depths. The searching paid off big time. We eased our way along a weed line and we saw several fish in 7 feet of water. We dropped the anchors and it did not take long for us to hook up. Bloodworms and size 12-14 black and red ice cream cone chironomids were now working great. We did take the time to ensure our bottom fly is just 6 inches to 12 inches off of the bottom. The next 3 hours was amazing fly fishing. We were even able to sight fish to several lake whites that were cruising.

The interesting part of our day was finding the fish were not very active in a place that just a few days ago was on fire. We took the time to find hungry fish. The depth is important. Today the active fish were in 7 feet of water with a water surface temperature of 58-60F. We talked to 2 fellas that landed just 1 whitefish all day and they were using scented baits (legal). Those fellas were not able to find were the active fish were. Rick and I tried different depths and then finally found active fish on a flat.
