Fly Fishing at Plummers Arctic Lodge 2023-Great Bear Lake-Part 1

Plummer's Arctic Lodge at Great Bear Lake is one fantastic place! Karen, Doug, along with our friends Mike, Leon and Scott just spent 7 wonderful days enjoying all that the arctic has to offer to a fly fisher. We had been waiting 4 years to go on this trip. Our adventure did not disappoint us at all. There were so many incredible moments that will never be forgotten. Fly fishing for monster lake trout, arctic grayling and arctic char was indeed a treat!

Over the next week, I will be writing about our adventure.

Our trip started at the Edmonton International Airport. We hauled an amazing amount of fly fishing gear  on this trip. It took a while to get everything sorted out at the Edmonton Airport for our flight to Yellowknife, in the North West Territories. After a two hour flight, we landed in Yellowknife. Plummer's Arctic Lodge had staff meet us at the airport. They stored our gear in preparation for the flight to Great Bear Lake the next morning.

After an overnight stay at the Nova Motel in Yellowknife, we were picked up and taken to Summit Air in Yellowknife for our one hour, forty-five minute flight to Plummer's Arctic Lodge on Great Bear Lake. The turbo prop was full of fishermen, some heading to Trophy Lodge and Arctic Lodge; outpost camps. We were set up at the main lodge after landing on the gravel runway.

Staff quickly unloaded our gear and got it to our cabin while we ate lunch and got our fishing licenses.

We then quickly set up our lake trout fly rods to fish around the Narkay Islands until supper at 7:30 pm. The wind was calm so we all enjoyed fly fishing right 'til supper. We caught several lakers some is the 10-12 pound range. The lakers were fat and well feed.

At supper, Chuck Coulter, the Camp Manager told us to get ready to fly to the Tree River in the morning. Oh we all got ready right after supper for our two night stay on the amazing Tree River just a few miles from the arctic ocean. The world record arctic char came from the Tree River-it was 33 pounds in weight!

Tomorrow I will post how that part of the trip went. In a word, amazing!
