Finally it is May 15th. We can fish the Red Deer River and several of our larger walleye lakes. Today Karen and I joined Steve Luethi and Josh Nugent; owner of Out Fly Fishing Outfitters Fly Shop in Calgary for a day on Sylvan Lake. As you can see, we all used seperate boats to keep "social distancing." Our day started early and it was windy and cold. We all bundled up and got out on the choppy lake. We hoped to catch pike, walleye and lake whitefish. The frigid start of the day also made for slow fishing. We worked our way along the shoreline looking for big pike and walleye. Well Karen hooked a nice lake whitefish to get things going on a chironomid. Steve and Josh hoped to find a gigantic pike to tangle with. The guys were casting large articulated streamers. The water temperature was in the low 40s F and the shallower water had slightly warmer temperatures. Finally we started to encounter walleye and lots of them. We were using darker balanced flies and streamers. Todd Oishi's Vampire Leech started to help us hook up regularly. We did mix in more whitefish and a few pike.
The wind died down and the warm sun came out and the fly fishing picked up. That made for a relaxing afternoon with lots and lots of fish.
We were all pulled to shore by a Conservation Officer. He checked our boats, licences and talked at length to us about the new regulations on Sylvan Lake. We were doing it right so we had no problems. We were glad to see a Conservation Officer out checking everyone.
Enjoy May long weekend. Be safe, practice social distancing and follow the regulations.
