Walleye and Goldeye on the Red Deer River

Karen and I had an opportunity to float the Red Deer River with some friends. We did not want to intrude on their day but we did float in close proximity and coordinated our car shuffle. We floated from Penhold to Red Deer. We wanted to catch goldeye, mooneye, and walleye.

Just a side note about the float. Do NOT leave valuables in your vehicle at the Penhold Bridge. We saw one vandalized car with the windows smashed out! The Penhold picnic area and boat launch has the gates close at 9:30 pm. You can park outside the gates to avoid problems. If you are pulling out at Fort Normandeau, the park closes at dusk!

Josh (owner of OFF Fly Shop in Calgary) and Steve were taking some young people out to try and catch their first goldeye. And they were quite successful. Karen and I caught several goldeye, some on dry flies but most on a wiggle worm. We also connected with several walleye using a minnow imitation.

The Red Deer River was flowing at 70 -3m/sec. It was in good shape although it definitely was not gin clear!

The water temperatures were not too high for walleye and goldeye.

It was a very enjoyable day.
