Karen and I have been trying to get to this lake for some time to fly fish. We finally had our window of opportunity. The weather looked excellent so we loaded up the Gulf with our pram, hound and fly fishing gear and headed off. We were heading to Karen's old stomping ground for three days. That in itself was a lot of fun!
I did do some research and found a bathometric map. The map was quite valuable and some intel from a good friend helped us a lot! Thanks Roy!
Well we started by exploring the lake with a quick tour! Once we got the lay of the lake, we started to fly fish with flashbacks and ice minnows. We caught lots of smaller rainbows. Later in the day, we worked an edge that looked awesome. We started to catch larger rainbows and then Karen connected with a very large brown that she landed with a small ice minnow. Karen hooked two more but they got away during the battles. We started using ultimate boatmen later in the day and we did very well.
The second day started out with sight fishing for browns, tigers and rainbows with leeches and ice minnows in just 18 inches of water. You could see the trout cruising right along the edges of the tulles and cattails. We did connect with a few. This is a game I love. The wind started to calm and trout were rising. We switched to ultimate boatmen and we had an incredible afternoon and evening. We continued to fly fish with ultimate boatmen on the third day. We were a bit late getting to the lake because of the fog! The wind was blowing on day three but in the afternoon, the ultimate boatmen stripped with a long leader on a floating line gave outstanding results.
Karen and I had a great mini holiday. It was a great break from our home routine. Pepper had a great time too!
I love tiger trout!
