A Warm BUT Wintery Day in the Canyon

The cutthroat trout season here in Alberta is down to the last few weeks. Finally we had an opportunity to get out on our eastern slopes. There has been a lot of snow out in the west country. The weather forecast looked great. After a two hour drive, Karen, Colin and I geared up. Full winter gear was the order of the day! It was -7C but we hoped for a fine warm late fall day. It was icy, slippery, and snowy but we anticipated a great day. The canyon river looked to be in great shape although the water was ice cold.

We did connect with a a number of trout but the cutthroat were sluggish and not very aggressive. Nymphing was the order of the day. The light in the canyon was beautiful but it also made for challenging photography!

About 2 o'clock, the air temperature became pleasantly warm! The canyon was enjoyable to fish! We did have to scramble over icy rock bands but we were careful!

The active fishing window was down to 11 am to about 3 pm.

Definitely a neat day to be out.
