Happy Mother's Day everyone! I hope all the special moms in your life were spoiled today!
We arrived at the lake just before noon. It was cold (5C), a light drizzle was falling and there was no wind! All I could see was chironomid adults on the surface everywhere and lots of them. The arctic terns and swallows were devouring the adult chironomids. It was very cool to watch!
Karen and I quickly launched the boat and we headed over to met up with Steve and Taryn who were already out on the lake.
While we motored across the lake, we stopped to watch the terns and swallows chowing down. We finally caught up to Steve and Taryn. Karen and I started off with micro leeches but we quickly switched to chironomids (a Rusty Nail size 16). The action was excellent. We caught mostly rainbows and a few tiger trout! Fishing in 12 to 14 feet of water about 7 or 8 feet down worked great.
I do not think that I have seen a chironomid hatch that heavy before. The strikes from the trout were hard and the rainbows and tigers were feisty!
I was quite distracted by the eagles, sand pipers, osprey, hawks, pelicans, terns, loons and a wide variety of ducks and geese.
The Arctic Terms were picking the chironomid adults off of the lake's surface!
The swallows swooped in to get in on the feeding frenzy!
...and then it was our turn.
