A Chinook in December Means a Mad Dash to the Red Deer River to Fly Fish

Colin Allison photo

That was a serious chinook! The thermometer climbed up to a balmy 9C. Karen, Larry, Colin and I got out to the dam to fly fish for walleye, whitefish and browns. We were lucky enough to connect with all three species. Larry told me it was his first time fly fishing in December. Colin and I have made several trips out to the Red Deer River this late in the season. ...and Karen, she waits until the weather is balmy and then she is on the water with the rest of us.

The Red Deer River is open until the last day in February to fish! When warm air spills over the mountains into Alberta, it can be well worth the effort to bundle up and get out there.
